Description
At over 10,000 feet high, the top of the Haleakala volcano reaches through the tropical clouds often trapping them in the crater depression. Haleakalā National Park, is 30,183-acres (122.15 km2) the majority of which is wilderness.
Haleakala, which is Hawaiian for Home of the Sun, figures prominently in to the Hawaiian religion. The Demi-god Maui is supposed to have pulled up the island chain we call Hawai`i with his skillfully made fishhook and line and It is on the summit of Haleakalā that Maui snared the sun, in order to slow its passage through the sky
