Description
The big island consists in total of five separate volcanoes: the Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualālai, Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcano.
Though Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the state and the larger volcano, Kīlauea is the most famous of the Hawaiian volcanoes, and rightly so! It is the youngest and most active of the five volcanoes and has been erupting continuously since 1983.
The Halemaʻumaʻu Crater a pit crater, pictured here, is located within the much larger summit caldera of Kīlauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Kīlauea Volcano continues to erupt at its summit in Halemaʻumaʻu crater and at Puʻu ʻŌʻō crater.
The lava lake in Halemaʻumaʻu crater fluctuates in flaming intensity as new lava pulses then begins to cool.
