Description
A beautiful autumn day at Opus 40 Sculpture Park.
Harvey Fite was a sculptor of wood and stone. In May of 1938 he found the perfect place to work: an abandoned bluestone quarry in the middle of the woods in the tiny hamlet of High Woods, N.Y He bought this twelve-acre paradise of natural materials from the widow of the last quarrymaster, and built his house and studio on the eastern lip of the quarry. Using dry-key stone techniques adapted from the Mayans, Opus 40 is made from millions of pieces of indigenous bluestone, laid by hand, creating a labyrinthine world of finely fitted stone, swirling with ramps and terraces constructed around pools and trees and fountains, rising out of bedrock a half mile deep. Walking around the 6½-acre sculpture creates visual change as you move from area to area, which curl around trees and embrace quarry springs, set against the backdrop vista of Overlook Mountain.
