What Can You Learn From 29,000 Rubber Duckies? In 1992 a cargo freighter from China to the U.S.A. passed through a storm in the Pacific Ocean and a container fell off the freighter, breaking open when it hit the water. Nearly twenty-nine thousand rubber duck, turtles and frogs were set loose. Following the ocean currents approximately nineteen thousand rubber ducks headed south to Australia and South America, ten thousand of these rubber bath toys floated north through the Berring Strait, into the arctic where they were caught in the ice flows and eventually carried to the North Atlantic Ocean. In 2007 these rubber duckies began washing up on the shores of Great Britain.
Researchers have tracked the ducks using them to help chart the ocean currents.
For the rest of us, what can we learn from the perseverance of 29,000 rubber ducks?
